Italian flag-carrier ITA Airways has commenced operations to the Libyan capital Tripoli. The airline is the one of the first western carriers to re-commence flights to Libya after a somewhat 10-year hiatus.
Many European carriers suspended operations to Tripoli in 2014, in the wake of civil war breaking out in the north African country.
Commencing operations on January 12, 2025, the Italian carrier launched its first nonstop flight to Tripoli from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, operated by an A319 aircraft.
Andrea Benassi, general manager of ITA Airways noted that this new route will provide connectivity for Italy while “supporting the progress, growth and development" of Libya.
Connectivity from Rome to Africa grew during 2024, exceeding a threshold of two million passengers to and from the Italian capital, up 38% compared to 2023.
ITA’s flight between Rome and Tripoli will operate two weekly frequencies.
