India DGCA steps up safety checks

In response to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) criticism that the Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is not stringent in enforcing its rules, the authority is increasing its surveillance of airlines. Local media reports attest that Jet Airways has undergone a recent safety check where 40 crew members were required to carry out a safety drill to test evacuation of passengers in case of an emergency as part of the re-certification procedure for the Air Operator’s Permit. Media reports that certain crew members were grounded pending enquiry as they did not follow the evacuation procedure. The airline has confirmed that it will take the test again this week and that no suspensions occurred as a result of the process.
