Gatwick Airport revenue up 30% as air travel recovery continues
Gatwick Airport's full year revenue was up 30.7% to £1bn ($1.27bn) in 2023, driven by a continual post-pandemic recovery of passenger numbers. It noted that passenger numbers were up 24.7% from 2022 to 40.9 million travelling through the airport; reaching 88% of pre-pandemic (2019) levels. In particular, recovery peaked in both July and October where passenger numbers reached 94% of 2019 levels. Its profit after tax for the year was £314.8 million ($401.2 million), up 69.9%, with its EDBITDA at £617.7 million ($786.98 million), up 38.4%. ""Combined, our strong performing airline, retail and other revenue streams means we can once again invest in substantial airport improvements,"" said London Gatwick CEO Stewart Wingate. ""Passengers will already have seen our fully redeveloped train station, new shops, bars and restaurants, and more exciting developments will complete over coming months and years."" The airport is currently awaiting independent inspection of its existing Northern Runway planning application, which would bring it into routine use. Wingate added: ""Our Northern Runway plans are at a critical stage in the process and we will continue putting forward our strong case.  Ensuring that all growth is achieved sustainably is of course an ongoing priority and we will keep demonstrating and evolving our commitment to reduce our environmental impacts"". The airport announced in 2023 it was investing over £250 million ($292.9 million) towards becoming a net zero airport by 2030.
