Dozens of flights out of Europe's busiest airport, Heathrow in London, were cancelled early on January 23 due to freezing fog.
As temperatures overnight plunged to near -10 celsius, airlines were told by air traffic controllers to thin out their Monday schedules.
British Airways had by mid-morning axed around 80 flights, with Aer Lingus, KLM, SWISS and United Airlines among the other carriers to ground aircraft.
The fog warning was due to be lifted at 11am local time, though cancellations were still being announced after midday.
