Divers from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), are continuing to search the Potomac River for additional aircraft debris from both American Airlines CRJ700 and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter which were involved in a mid-air collision on January 29, 2025.
Additional larger pieces of wreckage, identified by a LiDAR survey, have been recovered by the crane and are being offloaded and brought to a secure location for documentation.
The American Airlines flight that was travelling from Wichita, Kansas to Ronald Regan National Airport in Washington DC on January 29, 2025, collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter while on final approach to the airport. All 64 passengers and crew on-board the jet lost their lives, along with three people on the army helicopter.
The US National Transport Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed last week that wreckage from American Airlines flight 5342 had been transferred to a secure location for a full wreckage layout and examination, as salvage teams continue to retrieve parts of the aircraft from the Potomac River.
NTSB investigators continued to document the helicopter wreckage. Several components were removed from the wreckage and arrangements are being made for detailed follow up examination of these items.
