The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified Pratt & Whitney’s GTF Advantage engine for A320 family aircraft. The Advantage is the latest engine from the GTF family to be certified.
In December 2024, the FAA certified the company’s GTF engine that will power the A321XLR aircraft. This certification also follows an announcement from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) last week, after it issued type certification for A321XLR aircraft, powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines.
Pratt & Whitney said the GTF Advantage delivers 4-8% more take-off thrust, enabling a higher payload and longer range.
“With this certification and engine deliveries on track for later this year, it's fitting we mark these milestones in 2025, as Pratt & Whitney celebrates a century of powering the future,” said Rick Deurloo, president of commercial engines at Pratt & Whitney.
Since July 2023, Pratt & Whitney has been forced to recall and inspect hundreds of GTF engines to resolve manufacturing defects.
The GTF Advantage engine has undergone over twice the amount of testing compared to the original GTF engine. Some of its key features will be integrated into current GTF engines to enhance time on wing. Pratt & Whitney also said it is working to ensure that the GTF Advantage will be compatible with future specifications for 100% sustainable aviation fuel.
