FAA bans all US carriers from operating in Haitian airspace

The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has banned all US carrier from operating in Haitian airspace for 30 days.

The FAA imposed a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to all US carriers which prohibits them from within Haiti's territory and airspace, due to safety risks linked to ongoing security instability.

This comes after a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale was struck by gunfire from nearby gangs while attempting to land at Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP) in Haiti on November 11, 2024. The gunfire injured one flight attendant, with the flight being diverted to the Dominican Republic.

“This NOTAM applies to all US air carriers and commercial operators; all persons exercising the privileges of an airman certificate issued by the FAA, except such persons operating U.S.-registered aircraft for a foreign air carrier,” said the FAA.

Additionally, the NOTAM will not stop flights in Haiti if the FAA has given permission for those operations.
