Eurowings blames "high location costs" for reduction of operations at Hamburg Airport

Eurowings is set to reduce its operations from Hamburg Airport during 2025 as “location costs are too high,” the airline said in a statement.

The German carrier will remove over one thousand flights from its programme, that were set to depart to and from Hamburg.

“The reduced offer will significantly weaken the direct connection to Hamburg and make flying from the Hanseatic city noticeably more expensive,” said Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings.

Bischof added: “This development could have been avoided. But the airport's plans for a completely disproportionate increase in charges leave us no choice. It is very regrettable that no viable solutions have been offered here. The ones who are now suffering are leisure and business travellers from the region.”

Eurowings joins low-cost carrier Ryanair in reducing operations from the north German airport, with Ryanair cutting operations at Hamburg by 60% during the summer period of 2025.

The Lufthansa subsidiary currently has 16 aircraft based at the airport and serves 70 destinations.
