easyJet has applied to join the London Airports Consultative Committee, which represents the “operational and strategic interests” of airlines operating at London Heathrow. It is an indication that the low cost airline is considering a move to London’s biggest airport.
easyJet’s interest in Heathrow could prove vital in the ongoing debate over runway expansion in the UK’s densely-populated south east.
If Heathrow receives the go-ahead for a third runway, it will open up more landing and take-off slots. Heathrow has been full for 10 years, and as a result, slots currently exchange hands for tens of millions of pounds.
A spokesman for easyJet confirmed the carrier had applied to join the committee. He said that easyJet has an interest in the expansion plans of “both Heathrow and Gatwick”.
