The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has certified A350-900 aircraft fitted with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 Enhanced Performance (EP) engines.
The Trent XWB-84 EP is an evolution from the A350-900s current engine, incorporating upgraded fan, compressor and turbine aerodynamics and enhanced turbine blade cooling.
Its performance capability is set to deliver 1% lower fuel consumption, which will provide airlines with a reduction in overall operating costs as well as emissions.
"With EASA's certification of the Trent XWB-84 EP to power the A350-900, we strengthen the aircraft's position as the long-range leader,” said Julien Puyou, Airbus’ head of widebody programme.
Puyou added: “Together with our partner Rolls-Royce, this latest evolution underscores our joint commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.”
Airbus also stated that this approval from the EASA will be followed in the “very near future” with the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) corresponding certification –allowing for this new engine variant to be operated by airlines worldwide.
