DRC to form new startup in bid to improve safety standards

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has announced plans to create a new startup airline in an initiative designed to improve a previously poor safety record.

The Congolese Ministry of Transport stated that the airline will be named “Congo Airways”, and is expected to commence operations by the end of 2014.

The Congolese government also signed an agreement last week with Air France Consulting to develop a business plan for the carrier.

The government announced last year that it intended to launch a new national airline to replace Lignes Aeriennes Congolaises (LAC), which went bankrupt in 2003. Most of the airlines based in the country are on an EU blacklist, banning them from flying over Europe.
