DHL Express and Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease, have entered a new partnership in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the air freight of medicines manufactured in Ireland.
Alexion is the first company in Ireland to commit to a 100% switch from traditional aviation fuel to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which can reduce GHG emissions by over 80% compared to conventional aviation fuel. SAF will be provided through the DHL GoGreen Plus service.
SAF will be used for all European air freight shipments across 19 countries, such as Germany, Luxembourg and Spain. The fuel will be produced from waste and residue-based feedstock and can be used without aircraft engine modifications.
Sylvia Kiely, vice president, global supply chain and product strategy lead, Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease, said by entering this partnership with DHL Express, the company has “signed up immediately to a 100% change in fuel”.
“Rather than scaling up over time, we are demonstrating how seriously we take environmental stewardship,” added Kiely.
DHL Express stated that this initiative aligns with the company's sustainability strategy of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
