Cirium says UK aviation could be hit hard by March border strike

Aviation analytics provider Cirium has said hundreds of thousands of passengers could be affected when UK border officials go on strike for a day on March 15,

There are to be 2,125 flights landing at British airports on the day of the industrial action, Cirium estimated, a potential passenger load of over 365,000 seats.

Over a quarter of the flights will touch down at London Heathrow, Cirium said, with London Gatwick and Manchester next-busiest with 267 and 173 respectively.

British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair are due to operate around half the flights between them, Cirium said.

Border officials went on strike in late 2022, with the UK government deploying soldiers to fill in at border points, including at airports.

Announcing the strike, which said was an “escalation”, the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union said it was part of a “national dispute over pay, pensions, redundancy terms and job security, and follows hard on the heels of last week’s successful strike that saw PCS members in 123 government departments walk out across England, Scotland and Wales”.
