China Airlines continues robust routes expansion in Southeast Asia

China Airlines has announced new flights to Thailand’s Chiang Mai and the Philippines Cebu in the coming months, continuing its spree of routes expansion in Southeast Asia. China Airlines recently started flights to Bali, Indonesia to tap into the leisure tourism market.

As leisure travel picks up, China Airlines has opted to tap non-capital tourist spots in both countries. China Airlines is expected to face competition from EVA Air and Starlux Airlines on the Cebu route, offering daily flights while on the Thailand route, EVA Air and Thai AirAsia can give tough competition.

According to China Airlines, the Cebu and Chiang Mai routes will help China Airlines take advantage of the transit market connecting flights to major cities in North America and Europe. The resumption of services and more frequent flights to Southeast Asian destinations form part of the strategy to target the transit market. China Airlines will also continue to monitor the market and evaluate the launching of new routes.

The airline said that its overall passenger flights in the fourth quarter would increase by 30%, of which routes to Southeast Asia will increase significantly by 50%. The airline also said that they would be adding a total of 17 passenger routes in Southeast Asia providing Taiwan passengers with multiple options for traveling abroad by January 2023,
