Brussels Airlines release second quarter results
The Belgian national carrier, Brussels Airlines has reported an adjusted operating profit of €11.6 million in the second financial quarter of this year. It reported an operating loss of €47 million in the first six months of the year, down from a loss of €12 million in the first half of last year. Its operating expenses in the period was flat at €752 million. Revenues were down 3% to €683 million. The airline said production in the second quarter was ""lower than in the same period in 2023"" as a result of shortage of spare parts and a shift from maintenance from winter to spring. The airline was also unable to secure a wet-lease operator that was used in 2023, which resulted in less seats being available between April and June of this year. “Aviation is a very volatile industry with highs and lows. At Brussels Airlines, we’ve achieved a cost base that allows us to be profitable, even when we face headwinds,” said Nina Owerdieck, Chief Financial Officer, Brussels Airlines. She continued: “We were able to be profitable in the second quarter, which proves our strategy is working. We remain committed to reach a strong profitable result in 2024 aiming for maintaining the profitability level of 2023.” Looking ahead for the summer season, Brussels Airlines has added one additional A330 to its fleet as well as reopening a route to Nairobi.
