Boeing has offered a new deal with leaders of its machinists' union to end strike action, as factory output still remains halted.
The new offer from the troubled manufacturer includes “two significant " changes to the previous deal that was rejected by workers, with this new deal including a 38% general wage increase (GWI) over a period of four years.
Some 33,000 workers at its Seattle and Portland factories - represented by IAM District 751 and W2 - voted to reject the manufacturers most recent offer with a 64% majority on October 23, 2024. The workers had originally called for a 40% wage increase. This included a 35% wage increase over the course of the four-year contract, with an immediate 12% pay increase.
In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, the association said: “The two significant changes in this offer from the last one are: 38% GWI over four years - 13%, 9%, 9%, 7%, which compounds to 43.65% over the life of the agreement. The $12,000 ratification bonus combines the previous $7 thousand ratification bonus and the $5 thousand lump sum into the 401k."
The statement continued: “Now, members can choose how this total amount is received - in your paycheck, contribution to your 401K, or a combination of both. “
The union is encouraging striking workers to vote for this latest deal as they believe that withholding labour further will risk a regressive or lesser offer in the future.
Workers are set to vote on this new deal on November 4, 2024, with the vote closing the same day.
