An American Airlines flight travelling between New York and Tokyo Haneda was forced to turn back to the US due to a maintenance issue, diverting to Dallas, and landing 12 hours after originally departing New York.
The incident occurred on March 31, 2025. The 787-9 made a U-turn over the Pacific Ocean, just under seven hours into its 14-hour journey.
The plane then travelled a further six hours to Dallas, before touching down at the airport at 10:12pm local time, some 12 hours and 13 minutes after departing New York.
An American Airlines spokesperson stated that passengers were provided hotel accommodations in Dallas and that a replacement service then departed for Tokyo on April 1, 2025.
