AMERICAN AIRLINES FARES RISE ON INCREASE FUEL COSTS

American Airlines is raising the base cost of a return trip by $10 to offset rising fuel prices – the seventh rise this year from a US airline. Delta, JetBlue Airways and AirTran Airways have confirmed they had not raised prices, although United, Continental and Southwest did not confirm plans for any fare rises.

However the five network airlines — United, Continental, Delta, American and US Airways — usually match each other’s price rises.

American’s latest fare increase also extended to Hawaii and Canada, where round-trip tickets rose by up to $21.

Other US airlines are attempting to offset higher costs elsewhere, such as baggage charges. JetBlue has recently raised the charge for checking a second bag to $35 from $30.
