The airspace in Niger is currently closed following a military coup leading to multiple flight diversions and cancellations adding to passenger and airline woes. The schedules of some airlines like Kenya Airways remain unaffected while some others like British Airways and Air France have to amend their flight schedules and suspend their flights to Niger and its neighbouring countries.
Niamey Diori Hamani International Airport (NIM) is the country's main hub, handling most of its commercial flights. While flights to Niamey have been canceled, several flights are being diverted via Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Mali. This has severely impacted all flights between Sub-saharan Africa and Europe, affecting passengers and airlines.
Today, British Airways flight BA56 flying from Johannesburg OR Tambo (JNB) to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) was diverted back to Johannesburg while Air France has announced that it would stop operating flights to Niamey until further notice, but it will operate flights between Paris and Lomé. It will also suspend flights to Bamako in Mali and Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso until August 11.
