US airlines, represented by Airlines for America, has requested that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) extend the waiver for minimum flight requirements at New York City airports by a year. The waiver's current deadline is set to expire in October, 2o24. The letter was seen and reported on by Reuters.
The industry expects ongoing challenges in staffing of controllers that manage New York airspace to continue through to the end of summer 2025, with the current staffing levels not allowing airlines to maximise their efficiency of the New York City airspace.
With minimum flight requirements, airlines can lose their takeoff and landing slots at congested airports if they are not being used 80% of the time. The current waiver allows airlines to eliminate some flights while still being able to retain their slots.
