AIRBUS TO INTERVENE IN QANTAS ROLLS-ROYCE LAWSUIT

Airbus has filed two affidavits with the Federal Court in Sydney relating to the lawsuit between Qantas and rolls-Royce. The European manufacturer also filed a motion yesterday morning to ask the court to keep secret contracts it made with Qantas.

Qantas is suing Rolls-Royce for damages caused by the explosion of one of its Trent 900 engines installed on a Qantas A380s in November.

Qantas claims that written advice from Rolls-Royce in 2000 and 2001 was ''misleading or deceptive'' because the engines it bought contained a defect. It was also told that the A380s powered by the Trent 900s would be able to operate ''regularly and reliably on Qantas's existing international routes … with a profitable payload and without the engines having to be replaced at any point before the end of the projected useful engine life''.
