AirAsia X has suspended its route between Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi, after launching the service in November of last year.
The airline stated that the termination of this service is part of its “network optimisation initiative”, after an analysis of the route showed that demand has remained low.
“As a volume-driven airline, it is crucial that we concentrate our resources where demand is strongest in order to deliver the best value fares and travel experiences," said Benyamin Ismail, AirAsia X CEO. “For example, as part of this ongoing network optimisation, we recently increased services between Kuala Lumpur and Almaty to five times weekly, unlocking nearly 77,000 seats for the next quarter.”
Speaking to Airline Economics around two weeks prior to the route launching in November 2024, Ismail stated that Nairobi would be a “significant new route” in the airline’s network. “Nairobi is the central hub for Africa,” commented Ismail. “The demand is there; there is a large African population outside of Kenya living in Australia.”
The carrier currently operates this service four times per week.
