Air Vanuatu has gone into liquidation, with EY Australia assigned as liquidators on May 9, amidst a backdrop of extensive maintenance issues. As a result, flights were cancelled with immediate effect and local media reported hundreds of passengers were left stranded.
EY Australia said Morgan Kelly, Andrew Hanson and Justin Walsh have been appointed as joint and several liquidators of the company. Vanuatu Daily Post reported that the airline's board was dissolved since EY Australia was appointed as administrator.
The Guardian had reported that it understood the airline's only 737 aircraft has been parked at Melbourne's Tullamarine airport for months. An airline spokesperson said the airline ""has provided assurances that they are working transparently and in partnership with the owner or lessor of the aircraft regarding the service taking place and the lessor is fully informed and involved.""
In March, Air Vanuatu said: ""While the airline continues to operate over 70% of its current scheduled international flights, it is doing so in a challenging environment, with the airlines sole Boeing 737 aircraft still awaiting parts and one of the contracted Solomon airlines A320s now also requiring engineering works.""
The airline had attempted to source parts from further afield such as America, Asia, and Europe in order to return its aircraft to service.
