Papua New Guinea’s Air Niugini has disclosed a firm order with Airbus for an additional two A220-100 aircraft, following an initial order for six A220s in 2023.
Gary Seddon, chief executive officer of Air Niugini, stated that the A220 is set to form the “backbone” of the carriers domestic and regional fleet, while supporting economic development in Papua New Guinea.
“As we continue to forecast strong growth, we have made the decision to increase our orders for this fuel-efficient type, bringing a whole new level of efficiency and comfort for our operations,” Seddon commented.
The new order was announced as the airline's first A220 entered final assembly at Airbus facilities in Mirabel, Canada.
In addition to new aircraft arrivals direct from Airbus, Air Niugini has lease agreements signed for three A220-300s from US-based lessor Azorra.
