Air New Zealand has made its largest ever purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), securing more than 30 million litres from Neste to be uplifted from Los Angeles and San Francisco through to February 2026.
Air New Zealand's chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer, Kiri Hannifin noted that this purchase represents 1.6% of the airline's total fuel supply for the 2025 fiscal year, this is more than four times the volume of SAF the airline used during the 2024 fiscal year.
"1.6% is still a very small proportion of our total fuel use, but I am thrilled with the trajectory. Like all airlines, we urgently need to move away from our high reliance on fossil fuels as quickly as we can. Securing higher volumes of SAF every year is critical,” added Hannifin.
This SAF will be manufactured by Neste in Singapore from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials such as animal fat waste and used cooking oil.
The New Zealand flag carrier has a current target of using 10% SAF by 2030.
