In a bid to consolidate Russian carriers, Aeroflot could acquire one of its smaller competitors, such as Transaero, UtAir, or Sibir. Officials states that negotiations are in progress and the preference is for Aeroflot to acquire Sibir.
Although S7 group and Globus have already offered bids for Sibir, if their bids are deemed too low by the state, Aeroflot is the preferred option. Local media suggest the sale of Sibir to Aeroflot would be brokered by Alfa Bank for a price of $35 million (1.1 billion roubles).
The merger makes good sense for Aeroflot as Sibir currently operates out of Domdedovo, while the majority of Aeroflot flights fly out of Sheremetyevo airport.
