Aeroflot hit by cyber-attack, with operations impacted

Russia's Aeroflot has been forced to cancel dozens of flights this week, after a hacking group claimed an attack on the carrier's IT network.

The cyber incident has led to the cancellation of up to 60 round-trip flights over July 28 and 29, though Aeroflot has reported that about 93% of its schedule had returned to normal.

A statement from hacking group Silent Crow said it carried out the attack with the help of a Belarusian group Cyberpartisans.

The hackers stated that they infiltrated the airline’s corporate network a year ago, noting that the hack completely “compromised” and “destroyed” the Russian carriers IT infrastructure.

While most of the flights affected were domestic, the disruption also led to cancellations for some international flights to Belarus, Armenia and Uzbekistan.

Footage posted on social media showed hundreds of delayed passengers crowding Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, where Aeroflot is based.
