The new $2.1bn Navi Mumbai Airport — developed by businessman Gautam Adani — is reportedly targeting a May opening, according to a report from Reuters.
Additionally, the report added that IndiGo is expected to move some of its operations to the new airport. Tata Group low cost carrier subsidiary Air India Express, as well as SpiceJet and Akasa, are in discussions to eventually move all of their operations to the airport.
Air India's full service cariier will continue to operate from the existing airport but is expect to move some of its domestic operations to the airport.
Mumbai International Airport is also managed by Adani Airports.
The new airport aims to reduce aviation bottlenecks and create an international transit hub. The report added that local authorities are planning to build non-aviation infrastructure surrounding the airport to boost revenues.
