Ethiopian Airlines has suspended its flights to Eritrea’s Asmara, effective September 3, 2024. The airline said it was “due to very difficult operating conditions it has encountered” in the East African country. It added the challenging conditions were “beyond its control”. Ethiopian’s CEO Mesfin Tasew told reporters at a news conference that Eritrea’s aviation authority had blocked money transfers from Ethiopian Airlines’ bank account in the Eritrean capital, according to Reuters. Tasew added that the airline could no longer continue operating in such an environment and, thus, suspended flights.
