British Airways is ramping up long-haul capacity for winter 2026, increasing its schedule by nine per cent as the airline targets stronger leisure demand and adjusts its network in response to geopolitical disruption.
The expansion includes the launch of two new routes – Melbourne and Colombo – alongside frequency increases across key transatlantic, Asian, African and Caribbean markets. Services from the US will be boosted, with Baltimore moving to daily year-round flights, Houston increasing to 12 weekly services and New Orleans rising to four per week, reinforcing the airline’s North Atlantic focus.
The carrier is also adding capacity across leisure-heavy routes, including additional Caribbean flying and increased frequencies to destinations such as Cape Town, Tokyo Haneda and San José.
Melbourne will be served daily via Kuala Lumpur from January 2027, while Colombo will operate as a three-times-weekly winter route from London Gatwick starting October 2026.
British Airways said the expansion is driven primarily by strong demand across its long-haul leisure network, with Chief Planning and Strategy Officer Neil Chernoff pointing to “high-demand routes around the world” and continued investment to provide greater choice for customers. The airline also highlighted its role in connecting North America to global destinations via its London hub as a key driver of growth.
In addition to underlying demand, the airline acknowledged short-term capacity adjustments linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict. British Airways has added extra flights to Bangkok and Singapore in recent weeks to accommodate displaced demand, while suspending services to several Middle Eastern destinations including Dubai, Doha and Tel Aviv. These network shifts are contributing to near-term capacity redeployment toward Asia.
The expansion marks one of British Airways’ largest seasonal increases in recent years and underscores a broader trend of network rebalancing, with capacity shifting toward resilient leisure markets and away from disrupted regions while the airline continues to rebuild and optimise its long-haul operations.
