Air India has placed an order for 30 additional single-aisle aircraft from Boeing, comprising 20 737-8s and 10 737-10s, as it steps up expansion in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
The deal, announced at the Wings Airshow in Hyderabad, lifts Air India’s Boeing order book to almost 200 aircraft across single-aisle and widebody families. The latest purchase includes a newly finalised order for 20 737-8s, alongside 10 737-10s that had previously been listed as unidentified on Boeing’s orders and deliveries website. Both transactions draw on existing options.
Air India said the additional aircraft will support steady fleet growth and upgrades over the coming years, with the 737-8 deployed on high-frequency domestic and short-haul regional routes, while the larger 737-10 will be used to increase capacity and lower unit costs through fleet commonality.
Boeing said the order reflects strong performance of Air India’s existing 737-8 fleet and underlines the importance of single-aisle aircraft to connectivity growth across India and South Asia. The manufacturer’s latest market outlook forecasts demand for nearly 3,300 new aircraft in the region over the next 20 years, with around 90% expected to be single-aisle types such as the 737 MAX.
