Wizz Air has reported its “best summer ever” in terms of flight completion and punctuality, as it looks towards a launch of Wizz Class, its new premium class trial, later this year.
Last week, the low-cost carrier reported that its flight competition rate between April and September climbed to 99.5% – its highest ever recording.
This was achieved against a 7% increase in total flights compared to the same period last year, with daily flights reaching almost 1,000 during the peak of summer.
The 0.5% of the flights that were cancelled were due to causes outside of Wizz Air’s control, the airline said, such as Middle East conflicts and European air traffic control (ATC) strikes.
In addition, on-time flight performance improved 22% over the same period in 2024.
The airline said the improvements have been driven by its €14bn Customer First Compass programme that was introduced in April this year.
Wizz Air has directed some of this investment towards the use of AI and other new technologies across its operations control centre, flight deck, and customer service, helping to provide rapid decision-making capabilities during disruptions.
In addition, the investment is helping to grow the Wizz Air fleet beyond 250, a milestone that the airline expects to hit later this month. Wizz Air aircraft have an average age of 4.7 years, and over 70% of the fleet is made up of latest-generation A321neos.
In December, the airline will also be launching Wizz Class, a trial of premium-class tickets across five European bases: Bucharest, Budapest, London, Rome, and Warsaw.
Silvia Mosquera, commercial officer at Wizz Air, told Airline Economics that Wizz Class is designed to meet passenger demand for greater space and comfort and faster exit from the aircraft upon landing.
“Wizz Class will feature an unoccupied middle seat, giving passengers in the aisle and window seats extra elbow room,” she said.
“This product will include other additional benefits such as priority boarding, a carry-on bag, space in the overhead bins and more benefits that we will announce when we launch the product.”
Wizz Air is scheduled to report its third-quarter earnings on November 13.
