Canadian airline WestJet has purchased the first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supplied in the country by Shell Aviation, with the fuel available via blockchain-powered digital book-and-claim system Avelia.
“WestJet proudly stands as the first airline to acquire SAF by Shell in Canada,” commented WestJet Group executive vice president and chief people, corporate and sustainability officer Angela Avery. “This first step sets the stage for future collaboration and innovation to encourage investments in this important lever for decarbonization”.
Shell Aviation employs the Avelia programme to supply the airline with SAF, using the blockchain to ‘provide clear and transparent tracking of the environmental attributes of SAF delivered into the aviation fuelling network,’ explains WestJet. The fuel’s environmental attributes can be allocated to both airlines and business customers, avoiding issues such as double-counting, and allowing corporations to ‘confidently view verified lifecycle emissions from SAF today, while working to establish sufficient SAF to meet their future net zero or science-based targets’.
