WestJet is to boost its fleet of over 180 aircraft with five brand new 737 MAX 8s, three to be leased from the China Development Bank Financial Leasing Co (CBD Aviation) and two from international aircraft lessor Avolon. The factory-fresh MAX 8s are due to be delivered in early 2025.

These five additional aircraft will augment WestJet’s existing order book to as many as 2022 brand new 737 MAXs before the end of 2025, and up to 62 additional aircraft of this type before the end of 2028; making WestJet’s narrowbody order book the largest of any Canadian carrier.

“As Canada’s coast-to-coast leisure champion and western home carrier, the continued expansion of our fleet in tandem with our low-cost foundation is a key accelerator of our growth strategy,” explained WestJet Group executive vice-president and chief financial officer Mike Scott.

Avolon president and chief commercial officer Paul Geaney added that with continued growth for the aviation sector expected in coming years, including in North America, Avolon is “excited to provide a fleet solution to a strategic customer in the region”.
