Calgary’s WestJet Airlines has reaffirmed its plans to acquire four wide-body aircraft for long-haul operations starting in late 2015. The type is yet to be determined.
WestJet president and CEO Gregg Saretsky said: “This is the natural, next-step evolution for WestJet.”
The airline initiall expects to deploy the aircraft on routes between Alberta and Hawaii during the winter season beginning in late 2015. The airline currently uses two B757-200s operated by the UK’s Thomas Cook Airlines on the service. That contract ends in the spring of 2015.
WestJet said further announcements regarding its widebody schedule for the 2016 summer season will be released at a later date, as it plans to expand into overseas markets.
