WestJet Airlines posts higher than expected revenues increase in Q3 2019

WestJet Airlines has posted a revenues increase of 10.5% to $1.39 billion, up from $1.26 billion in the prior year despite carrying fewer passengers.

The Calgary-based airline has said it made earnings of $119.4 million in the third quarter, the second-highest level in the airline’s history. Beating a guidance of $91.4 million.

No conference call will be held by WestJet to discuss the quarterly results ahead of its planned $3.5 billion acquisition by Onex Corp, which is being contested by Air Canada over foreign ownership limits.

In July, WestJet shareholders approved the proposed acquisition with 92.5% voting in favour.

During August, The Canadian Competition Bureau granted unconditional approval for WestJet Airlines’ proposed transaction with Onex Corporation by issuing a no-action letter.

Commenting on the results, Ed Sims, WestJet president and CEO, said: “We are very pleased with these remarkable results, achieving our highest ever third quarter load factor, second-highest ever third-quarter net earnings and the third-highest quarterly net earnings in WestJet’s history."
