US ups pressure on EU against ETS

The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood have penned a letter to European officials dated December 16 that urges the European Union to reconsider the including non-EU airlines in its Emissions Trading Scheme from January 1. The letter states that the directive is the "wrong way to achieve" a reduction in greenhouse gas pollution from jet engines and warns that the US was prepared to take “appropriate action" if the measure was not halted or suspended.
A ruling on the legality of the EU ETS is expected this week from the European Court of Justice.
Clinton and LaHood wrote: "We strongly urge the EU and its member states within their respective competences to reconsider this current course; halt or, at a minimum, delay or suspend application of this directive".
