US airlines' fuel cost was down 3.8% at $2.65 per gallon in May in comparison to the previous month at $2.75 per gallon, according to the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). However, compared to May 2019, fuel cost per gallon was up 25.2% at 53 cents.
Total fuel expenditure in the month was flat compared at $4.36bn, compared to April's $4.31bn. US airlines used approximately 1.6bn gallons of fuel in the month, up 5.1% over the previous month.
Domestic fuel consumption was up 4.7% compared to the same month last year, with domestic fuel costs also up 13.1% and an 8% increase in cost per gallon.
