US airfares picked up slightly in August compared to the previous month at 3.9%, according to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Airfares had been down 1.6% in July compared to June, which had also seen a 5% drop.
However, airfares were still below last year, with airfares during the month being down 1.3% compared to August 2023.
The federal agency also reported on September 12, 2024, that airline traffic was up 6.7% in June, compared to the same month last year. US airlines carried a record number of 89.7 million passengers systemwide in both domestic and international scheduled services. It is also up 2.8% over May 2024.
Some 77.2 million domestic passengers and 12.5 million international passengers were carried on US airlines in June.
