United Airlines flight 1001 on a 757-200 aircraft lost a landing gear wheel during takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport on July 8, 2024.
""The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,"" said a United spokesperson.
The aircraft landed safely at its intended destination in Denver with all 174 passengers and seven crewmembers uninjured, a spokesperson confirmed. The wheel caused no injuries on ground level. The flight took off around 7am local time and landed after 10am the same day.
The aircraft in question was delivered by Boeing around 30 years ago in 1994, with the OEM ending 757 production ten years later in 2004.
The event is reminiscent of a similar incident in March where a wheel from the airline's 777-200 flight fell off during takeoff, forcing an emergency landing with 235 passengers and 14 crew members onboard. The flight took off from San Francisco International Airport and was heading to Osaka, Japan. The wheel had landed in an employee car park, damaging at least one vehicle.
