United Airlines announces first flight school graduates

Fifty-one new pilots have finished their training at United Airlines' flying school, the first set of graduates produced by what the carrier says is the only such airline-owned facility in the US.

The graduation of the United Aviate Academy's inaugural class of pilots is, the carrier said, "an important step towards training the next generation of talented, qualified, and motivated aviators".

United aims to hire 10,000 new pilots by the end of the decade, with a quarter to start work in 2023.

"United is leading the industry in the training, recruitment and hiring of the next generation of talented commercial pilots and the progress we've made at United Aviate Academy after just one year is another example of an airline where good leads the way," said chief executive Scott Kirby.
