UK's CAA to take part in EU-sponsored airline safety and security research

A wing of the UK's aviation regulator has been appointed to head up a European Union project looking into the "impact of aviation security measures on aviation safety and vice versa".

CAAi, a division of the UK's Civil Aviation Authority, is part of a consortium with French business APAVE Aeroservices and Switzerland's Centre for Adaptive Security Research and Applications (CAPSA) that was last month awarded a three-year European Union Aviation Safety Agency contract.

CAAi's senior manager of aviation security Kevin Sawyer said the project could prove timely given that "to date, civil aviation safety and security regulations have largely been developed independently of each other, with limited interaction between the two domains.”

The aim, he suggested, was to lead to regulatory improvements down the line if safety and security issues were better-understood in tandem.
