Ukrainian carriers banned from Russian airspace

Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) has banned Ukrainian carriers YanAir, Wizz Air Ukraine, Ukraine International Airlines and Dniproavia from transiting Russian airspace with immediate effect.

The ban affects flights operating to Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan that transit through Russian airspace.

Ukraine International Airlines labelled the ban "destructive" and "a tool of political pressure. Russia’s unilateral actions of banning flights force UIA to significantly lengthen its air routes from Ukraine to the East. This will lead to increase in operating costs by 15-20%, as well as to flight delays, which will cause significant inconvenience to passengers.”

In May, Ukrainian authorities banned Aeroflot and Transaero Airlines  from serving the eastern Ukrainian cities of Kharkov and Donetsk after the escalation of conflict in the region. Ukrainian airlines are still allowed to operate through Russian airspace on flights to and from Russia.
