UK Government invests more than £300 million in greener transport options

The UK Government has launched a new initiative to support the aerospace industry development of new technology - with funding set to stand at more than £300 million.

The new initiative called the Future Flight Challenge will receive £125 million from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and industry investment of up to £175 million.

The Challenge will support the development of advanced new aerospace technologies such as electric propulsion systems that will reduce the environmental impact of flying, and major new innovations in urban air transport.

The Future Flight Challenge was announced as part of the Aerospace Sector Deal (ADS) agreed between Government and industry in December 2018.

Alongside this, five new transport research networks will receive a £5 million cash injection for its work developing cleaner forms of fuel and other tech innovations to reduce emissions and improve air quality.

The new transport research networks will be led by: the University of Birmingham, the University of Leeds, the University of Durham, Cardiff University and University College London.
