Reports have been circulating in the world’s press that Turkish Airlines is in negotiations to take over Air Malta although both airlines have refused to deny or confirm the rumours.
It has been suggested that THY could be seeking a full of a partial potential take-over of the Maltese flag carrier.
Meanwhile, Air Malta has been assessing if the airline can meet the targets set out in its restructuring plan with its current fleet.
Maria Micallef, chairperson of the airline, has commented to press that its current fleet of 12 leased aircraft is too many since they have had to lease out two aircraft to a third party since the airline couldn’t use them. Micallef said that it was imperative to avoid this situation continuing if the airline is to meet its restructuring targets and so the airline is currently analysing its network to how it can retain capacity with fewer leased aircraft.
