China Airlines and EVA Airways face hard decisions after Taiwan’s CCA (Civil Aeronautics Administration) decided to allocate the Songshan-Seoul Gimpo air traffic rights partly to Eastar Jet and T’way, the two Korean airlines are expected to launch their cheap flights to attract Taiwanese air passengers around the end of April, when the route is scheduled to open. China Airlines, EVA Airways and TransAsia Airways have yet to move against the foreign low-cost carriers in the competitive landscape, but will try to segment consumer bases and their target markets as strategies to fend off the competition in the short term. The Taiwan market is going to be proliferated by LLCs but this could create regional hub opportunities for the island nation.
