Sun Country Airlines' cargo growth boosts second quarter results

Sun Country Airlines reported its 12th consecutive profitable quarter with a net income of $6.6 million in the second quarter of 2025, up from $1.8 million a year prior.

The company's operating revenues were up 4.3% to $590.3 million, with its cargo business seeing the largest growth at 27.5% to $62.96 million. Passenger revenues were up 1.9% to $500.6 million.

“We are steadily incorporating our eight additional cargo aircraft throughout the second and third quarters,” said Sun Country CEO and president Jude Bricker. “As of the end of the second quarter, we had 15 cargo aircraft in service and expect all 20 freighters to be in-service by the end of the third quarter.”

To accommodate the growth of its cargo business, the company reduced its passenger service business with capacity decreased by 3.9% in the quarter, with a notable reduction in its scheduled service business after a 6.2% capacity decrease.

Operating expenses were up 31.5% to $16.3 million in the quarter.

For the third quarter, the company expects revenues to be flat or up 4%, totalling around $250 to $260 million in the period. Fuel is expected to cost $2.61 per gallon, down 3%. The company's operating income margin is guided to be around 3-6%, marking a 2.66 percentage point decrease to a 0.4 percentage point increase. Total system block hours are set to be up 5-8%.
