Stuttgart to host hydrogen engine testing operation

Hydrogen aircraft fuel cell developer H2FLY and Stuttgart Airport are to co-found a "Center of Excellence for Hydrogen in Aviation".

The centre will be based at the airport and is to be "purpose-built" for developing and testing hydrogen-electric propulsion for passenger aviation.

To be managed by H2FLY will manage the operation, which is to be in a hangar, and "will provide a central facility where businesses and scientific institutes can develop state-of-the-art concepts in zero-emission hydrogen-electric aviation, and then test them on the ground and in the air within the airport environment."

Such infrastructure, H2FLY said, "will enable the development of megawatt-scale components and subsystems along with the integration and test operation of hydrogen-electric powertrains".

The project is being funded by the Baden-Württemberg transport ministry.

"The Center of Excellence for Hydrogen in Aviation combines world-class science with a pioneering spirit, and will make important contributions to the future of flying," said airport chief executive Walter Schoeffer.
