ST Louis Lambert International gets FAA nod for expansion

St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s approval for building a new, consolidated passenger terminal capable of handling 21 million passengers per annum. The new, consolidated terminal to have 62 gates, an increase of 17 gates.

The airport currently has two terminals and is planning to add another one at the site of Terminal 1. The construction of the new airport will commence by 2026, awaiting FAA’s environmental review. Following environmental approval from the FAA, the airport will launch the architectural design phase of the project.

“The airport will also line up airline commitments for financial support,” said Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, Director, STL.

The Terminals 1 and 2 at the airport are primarily used b Southwestern. Terminal 2 also handles international flights, though Lufthansa is currently the only airline outside North America that operates to Lambert

The airport handled 13.7 million passengers in 2022, down 13.9% from 15.9 million passengers handled in 2019. The airport is planning to increase annual passenger capacity by 32% over 2019 levels to 21 million by 2040.
