ST Engineering AirX has announced a strategic partner with global leader in the testing, inspection and certification industry Bureau Vertias to advance Wing-in-Ground (WIG) technology, focussing on the classification and certification of AirX’s AirFish WIG craft. AirX is a joint venture between ST Engineering and Peluca.
The ten-seat Airfish is designed to operate just above the surface of the water, using ground-effect-generated aerodynamic forces to lift the vessel and achieve a more fuel-efficient high speed of travel. The two partners will work to classify and certify the Airfish 8 (using Bureau Veritas’ N1525 process) and will liase with other states ‘to register the marine platform in respective countries’.
As the OEM of the AirFish craft, AirX will leverage ST Engineering’s expertise in aviation certification and qualification with civil aviation authorities, while Bureau Veritas will provide advisory services, technology qualification assessments, and risk and safety assessments. Jeffrey Lam, president of commercial aerospace at ST Engineering, described the partnership as “a significant milestone in realising the huge potential of Wing-In-Ground technology in areas such as maritime transportation, and the delivery of parapublic and logistics services”.
Additionally, AirX will also collaborate with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore in the trials and development of AirFish. These are expected to commence in Q3 2024 at twice-month intervals.
